Tidal has just announced that they would be offering a free subscription tier in the near future. The corporation, which was originally led by Jay-Z, desired to grow its user base. The free tier gives you access to Tidal’s entire 80 million-song library, as well as its playlists. For the time being, however, it is only available in the United States. The move represents the first significant change under the leadership of Tidal’s new parent firm, Square, which purchased the streaming service earlier this year for $302 million.
Tidal follows in the footsteps of two other streaming service heavyweights, Spotify and Amazon Music, in launching its service. Tidal’s free option, like that of the other two services, comes with a catch. As promised, the subscription has resulted in less ad interruptions. Furthermore, the audio quality is restricted to 160 kbps, there is no offline listening option, and there are no limitless skips available.
Tidal Free is now included in the $10 per month HiFi tier as well as the $20 per month HiFi Plus subscription (previously Tidal HiFi). The lossless, CD-quality recordings are now included in the $10 per month tier.
The corporation is also implementing adjustments that are advantageous to the artists. “With the help of the vast majority of our record label and distributor partners, we’re working to make royalty payments more transparent for artists and rights holders,” says the company. Tied to the Tidal HiFi Plus tier will be the cash generated by direct artist payments as well as fan-centered royalties, among other things. The existing pro-rata system, which pays rights holders based on their proportion of overall streams, will be replaced by a fan-centered method, which would pay royalties based on the streaming activity of each individual HiFi Plus user. It’s fantastic to see a streaming provider attempting to assist artists in increasing their earnings.
