We should be seeking to accentuate the efforts and triumphs of individuals who are disadvantaged and are sometimes on the backfoot in an industry that is oriented to prioritizing cis-gendered males and produces a “glass ceiling with razor wire.”
Sisters Of Sound (SOS) has put together a playlist including some of the greatest female, non-binary, and gender non-conforming artists now creating the post-pandemic world of electronic music in 2021.
This list is a real emblem of marginalized genders spanning all electronic sub-genres, from techno to house to dancehall. This playlist features some of SOS Music’s personal favorites, including several artists who will be featured in their upcoming collection ‘SOS Music – Volume 2’.
SOS Music is a record label, radio program, and duo of selectors located in Los Angeles that was formed by Maddy Maia and Tottie in 2020 to promote female and gender minorities early in their careers.
If you like these selections and want to hear more from the pickers, SOS Music is going on tour in the United States; for more information, go here.
ANZ ‘YOU COULD BE FEAT. GEORGE RILEY’
Anz, who is based in Manchester and is one of the most prolific and diligent producers we know, has had an unstoppable year, so seeing this absolute gem of a tune achieve the international acclaim it deserves has been wonderful. After hearing her Spring/ Summer Dubs mixtape in 2020, we fell in love with Anz, and her subsequent releases have been faultless. Anz has a bright future ahead of him.
ELKKA ‘HARMONIC FREQUENCIES’
Elkka, a London-based producer and the founder of the Femme Culture label, has quietly carved out a name for herself in club music over the last few years, and her recent productions are flawless and, quite frankly, underappreciated, effortlessly blending huge melodic poppy moments and infectious vocal hooks with meticulously well-made beats and breaks. A new favorite is ‘Harmonic Frequencies.’
CLOSET YI ‘SWEAT SONIC’
Closet Yi, a perfect selector who has previously played some of Seoul’s most prestigious clubs, was recently named Resident Advisor’s Mix of the Day for her mix for Bicep’s series ‘Feel My Bicep,’ and has EPs out on Korea’s renowned label Honey Badger Records and London’s No Bad Days, among others. She provided this captivating music to SOS Music – Volume 2’s latest compilation. A club necessity for 2021, blending house, rave, and techno while keeping her bops’ rich lyrical essence.
BAE BAE ‘DO YOU WANT ME’
BAE BAE, located in Los Angeles, is undeniably a rising star. Her debut EP, ‘Spiral,’ was released in October of last year. You want to admire BAE BAE’s talents behind the turntables; she understands how to get the crowd going. This, along with her “I just want to see your smile” edit pack released earlier this year, which is influenced by Lisbon-based label Principe and includes an R&B edit by Budgie, has been a fixture in our radio programs and sets.
TYGAPAW ‘RUN 2 U’
TYGAPAW, a Brooklyn-based techno artist, is rewriting the sonic rulebooks by exploring their ethnic origins with Jamaican + dancehall infused emotive masterpieces. We can’t wait for them to perform with Lauren Flax and Julia Govor during our SOS Music takeover on December 10th.
NICE GIRL ‘HOT MMM’S & HMM’S’
We love the inclusion of trance, house, tribal + 80s synth across a full length – keeping our brains and toes stimulated. The debut album Ipsum by Australian producer Nice Girl aka Ruby Kerkhofs via Public Possession got us dancing and has featured on a lot of our Worldwide Fm shows; we love the inclusion of trance, house, tribal + 80s synth across a full length – keeping our brains and toes stimulated. We adore hot mmm’s and hmm’s because they sound euphoric.
MARAL ‘PROTECT U FEAT. LEE ‘SCRATCH’ PERRY’
Los Angeles-based artist Maral is a true artistic visionary. She has one of the most unique sounds out there right now; embracing her Iranian heritage using folk field recordings, and combining them with raw distorted beats – re-contextualising for a new audience. Her DJ sets and live shows are absolutely one of a kind – catch her supporting Avalon Emerson and Ben UFO in LA in December.
8ULENTINA ‘UPWARD SPIRAL’
In September of this year, 8ULENTINA, an Oakland-based DJ, producer, multidisciplinary artist, and co-founder of CLUB CHAI, produced this gem of an album. Their combination of percussion and instruments, as well as middle eastern melodies and breaks, hits all the right notes with us.
MASHA MAR ‘DORIS DAY’
Doris Day, Masha Mar’s thundering Belgian New Beat debut, was released on SOS Music last year. Masha Mar has been hard at work in the US, organizing and producing large events with DJ Harvey + Honey Dijon, DJing with Surround, and working tirelessly in the studio; we’re looking forward to hearing more music from her in 2022.
