Spotify is increasing the availability of its Car Thing, an $80 music and podcast player for automobiles, in the United States. Users were only charged for shipping during a test phase, which began in the spring when the device was first introduced to the public by invitation only.
Those who signed up for the Car Thing waitlist before now will be the first to get their hands on the company’s first hardware device, which is currently only available in limited quantities. Members of the Spotify service in the country can now sign up for the waitlist, though the Car Thing requires a Premium subscription as well as a smartphone to function.
It took Spotify several years to complete Car Thing, and only a few months later, the device was made available for purchase. The idea is to make infotainment features available to almost any vehicle, particularly older vehicles that do not have the latest and greatest touchscreens. You can use Car Thing to play music and podcasts in your vehicle after mounting it with one of the included mounts. You can use physical controls or voice commands, such as “Hey Spotify,” to control the device once it is mounted.
