There is no doubt that Virgil Abloh is a complex and nuanced creator, having founded his label Off-White while working at Louis Vuitton and dabbling in furniture design, consultation, and DJing. Now, the prolific collaborator has teamed up with Pioneer to create a capsule collection and DJ controller inspired by the latter of his passions.
Off-White builds on the Pioneer DDJ-1000 by adding signature design cues in a hazardous white and orange color scheme to create the appropriately named DDJ-1000-OW. As part of Abloh’s “SOUND ENGINEERING” process, this controller incorporates numerous ‘conceptual’ ideas, such as the quotation marks found throughout his work, dual branding on the fluorescent orange and matte white areas, and, as a DDJ-1000, it also inherits the setup of both the CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2 while remaining a 4-channel layout.
Along with the DJ controller, there is a capsule collection called “SOUND ENGINEERING” that includes cotton canvas T-shirts, hoodies, and a coach jacket. Silk-screen printing with fluorescent green ink creates graphics that are inspired by Off-White and Pioneer’s history, as well as the collaborative DDJ-1000-OW. which can be seen deconstructed on pieces alongside the Off-White cross.
As with the CDJ and DJM he designed in collaboration with Pioneer DJ, Virgil Abloh explains. “I wanted to take this opportunity to bring together technology and human interaction,” Virgil Abloh said in a statement. “Both music and fashion, in my opinion, are these intense forces that have the unique power to bring people together while letting you make your own statement all at the same time.”
One sizzling strip at a time.
