Google is poised to significantly expand its use of AI age estimation technology, a development that will lead to automatic restrictions for users identified as underage. This initiative, initially announced in February and first implemented on YouTube, is now extending to Google users within the United States.
How the System Works
The system will leverage machine learning (AI) to infer a user’s age. Google and YouTube have explicitly stated they will analyze data such as search queries and YouTube video consumption patterns to make these determinations. While this rollout will initially affect a “small set” of users, Google has expressed its intention to broaden the system’s reach.
Restrictions for Underage Accounts
Should Google’s AI determine that a user is under 18, the system will impose the same restrictions applied to users who self-identify as minors. These restrictions include:
- Disabling personalised advertising: Users will still encounter advertisements, but these will not be tailored to their individual profiles or past online behavior.
- Implementation of digital wellbeing tools: On YouTube, this may involve features such as bedtime reminders, summaries of watch time, combining notifications, and disabling notification sounds and vibrations.
- Limitations on content recommendations: YouTube may restrict the types or frequency of recommended videos.
- Deactivation of Timeline in Google Maps.
- Blocking access to adult applications on the Play Store.
The Appeal Process
A critical aspect of this system is the burden of proof placed upon the user should the AI incorrectly identify them as underage. If an adult user is erroneously flagged as a minor, they will be required to submit a form of identification to appeal the decision and regain full account access. Acceptable forms of verification include a government-issued ID, a credit card, or a selfie.
A Global Trend in Online Safety
This strategic shift by Google is occurring within a broader global context, driven by increasing pressure from governments and politicians—particularly in the US and the UK—to enhance online safety for children. The UK, for instance, has already widely implemented age verification requirements across various major platforms, including Bluesky, Reddit, Discord, and Spotify. This signals a notable departure from the previous “honour system” of age verification online, indicating that the next phase of internet usage will normalize the requirement for users to verify their age and identity.
