EDITORIAL STANDARDS

Document Version: 1.1
Effective Date: January 02, 2026
Last Updated: January 12, 2026

1. MISSION & VALUES

Our Editorial Identity

Midnight Rebels is an independent journal of electronic music culture, critical nightlife studies, and audio futurism. We are “For Those Who Stay Awake”—a publication that exists at the friction point between the main stage and the underground.

Core Editorial Philosophy

The Editorial Ethos: We operate from a place of “Post-Digital Primitivism,” believing that the soul of music lies not in pristine production, but in the authentic imperfections—the clip, the hiss, and the mistake. We celebrate the “Dirty Aesthetic” and champion producers who use distortion and analog chaos to prove there is still a pulse behind the machine.

We are distinctly a publication, not a performance. We do not sell nostalgia; we critique the now. We are distinct from tribute acts, rock anthems, and fashion labels that share our moniker.

2. EDITORIAL SCOPE & COVERAGE AREAS

Primary Coverage Verticals

Our editorial mandate spans six core areas:

  1. GLOBAL – International electronic music culture and nightlife developments
  2. MUSIC – Artist profiles, genre analysis, production trends, and music industry news
  3. CULTURE – Critical studies of rave culture, nightlife sustainability, and community dynamics
  4. MATTER – In-depth investigative journalism examining the economic, mental health, and social realities of the industry
  5. TECH – Music production technology, audio innovation, AI in music, and sound engineering
  6. EVENTS – Festival coverage, nightlife reporting, and live culture documentation

Geographic Orientation

We serve as the definitive gateway to emerging epicenters of electronic music culture globally. We track the pulse of scenes that are raw, unrefined, and urgent, documenting the energy of dance floors from the Eastern hemisphere to the Global South where the future is being written in real-time.

5. CORRECTIONS POLICY

Our Commitment to Accuracy

We strive for accuracy in every article we publish. However, errors can and do occur in journalism. When they do, we correct them promptly, transparently, and prominently. This policy outlines how we handle corrections.

What Constitutes an Error

A correction is warranted when:

  • A factual statement is inaccurate or unsupported
  • A quote is misquoted or taken out of context
  • A source is incorrectly attributed or misidentified
  • Data, statistics, or dates are wrong
  • A claim cannot be substantiated or has been contradicted

Minor issues that do NOT warrant a formal correction include:

  • Stylistic or grammatical improvements
  • Minor clarifications that don’t change the meaning
  • Link updates or formatting changes
  • Social media caption adjustments that don’t alter facts

Correction Process

Step 1: Identification

  • Readers, sources, or staff can report potential errors via our Contact page
  • The Editor-in-Chief or designated fact-checker reviews the report
  • Initial assessment determines if the claim merits investigation

Step 2: Investigation

  • The original writer is contacted to discuss the reported error
  • Original sources are consulted to verify accuracy
  • The publication verifies the claim against our records
  • Additional research is conducted if needed

Step 3: Decision

  • Within 5-7 business days, the Editor-in-Chief decides if a correction is warranted
  • The original writer is informed of the decision
  • If disputed, an editorial review process may be initiated

Step 4: Correction Implementation

  • A clear correction notice is added prominently to the article
  • The correction explains what was wrong and what is correct
  • The archived version is updated with the correction notice
  • A correction note is added to the byline or article header

Correction Notice Format

Corrections will appear at the top of the article in the following format:

CORRECTION: [Previous incorrect statement]. This has been corrected to: [Accurate statement]. We regret the error. Corrected on [Date].

For significant corrections, we may also:

  • Post a follow-up article explaining the error and its context
  • Update social media posts that cited the article
  • Notify email subscribers if the correction is substantial
  • Acknowledge the source who reported the error (if they request attribution)

Issuing Apologies

  • A formal apology is issued when an error significantly misleads readers
  • Apologies are distinct from factual corrections
  • The Editor-in-Chief determines when an apology is appropriate
  • Repeated errors by a writer may result in editorial review or suspension

Archival & Transparency

  • All articles retain correction notices permanently
  • Previous versions are accessible via archive where possible
  • A corrections log is maintained and can be made available upon request
  • Major corrections are noted in editorial retrospectives when relevant

Response Time

  • Simple factual corrections: 24-48 hours
  • Complex corrections requiring investigation: 5-7 business days
  • Disputed corrections: 10 business days + editorial review process

Appeals Process

If a writer or reader disputes a correction decision:

  1. A written appeal may be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief
  2. The appeal will be reviewed within 10 business days
  3. An editorial board may be consulted for significant disputes
  4. The decision will be communicated in writing with reasoning

6. NO BYLINE POLICY: STAFF-WRITTEN ARTICLES

When Articles Are Published as “Staff”

Occasionally, articles are published under a “Staff,” “Midnight Rebels,” or collective byline rather than an individual writer’s name. This policy explains why and ensures transparency with readers.

Reasons for Staff Bylines

Articles are published without individual bylines in the following circumstances:

1. Collaborative & Edited Pieces

  • The article resulted from reporting by multiple writers
  • Significant contributions from different staff members make individual attribution unclear
  • A piece has been heavily edited or rewritten from initial drafts
  • Multiple editors have substantially contributed to the final narrative

2. Aggregated or Compiled Content

  • The article synthesizes reporting from multiple sources within our publication
  • Breaking news where multiple reporters contributed to rapid reporting
  • Roundups or lists compiled from multiple staff contributions
  • Calendar items or event announcements from various sources

3. Institutional Reporting

  • The story represents institutional reporting or investigation by the publication
  • Investigation involved multiple reporters over time
  • The piece reflects editorial consensus rather than individual perspective
  • Stories involving sensitive editorial decisions require organizational backing

4. News Briefs & Updates

  • Short news updates or breaking news alerts (typically under 300 words)
  • Editorial announcements or publication updates
  • Community bulletins or announcements
  • Time-sensitive news that requires immediate publication

5. Technical or Explanatory Pieces

  • Explainers that synthesize multiple sources of information
  • Glossary entries or technical definitions
  • FAQ articles or how-to guides
  • Educational content requiring multiple expert inputs

6. Anonymous Reporting

  • Stories involving sensitive topics where reporter safety is a concern
  • Investigative pieces where anonymity protects sources
  • Reporting on sensitive industry practices or alleged wrongdoing
  • Stories where the writer’s identity would compromise the narrative

7. Legal or Liability Reasons

  • Articles involving potential legal challenges
  • Pieces requiring legal review before publication
  • Stories where institutional backing is important for liability
  • Corrections or clarifications regarding previous reporting

Transparency for Staff Bylines

When an article is published as “Staff” or under a collective byline, we will:

  • Disclose the reason in a note at the bottom of the article or in an author bio explaining why no individual byline is attributed
  • Credit contributors if multiple writers worked on the piece (though not as primary bylines)
  • Maintain editor accountability by listing the editor responsible for fact-checking and publication
  • Explain aggregation if the piece compiles work from other Midnight Rebels articles
  • Protect sources when anonymity is necessary while explaining that protection is in place

Staff Byline Transparency Statement

The following note will appear on staff-written articles:

About This Article: This article was reported and written by the Midnight Rebels editorial team. [INSERT SPECIFIC REASON]. Our editors ensure that all material meets our Editorial Standards regardless of byline format.

For sensitive investigations:

About This Article: This article was reported by a Midnight Rebels journalist whose name has been withheld to protect [source confidentiality/reporter safety/etc.]. The editorial process involved [brief explanation of editorial oversight].

Editor Attribution

Even when a writer is not individually credited, the Editor-in-Chief or Editor responsible for the article will be listed, ensuring accountability and reader trust.
