Manila Club Accuses Tagum Club of Brand Imitation
The recent dispute between Gangbang, a Manila establishment, and EXO, a Tagum venue, highlights the complex issues surrounding business inspiration and ethical imitation. Gangbang alleges that EXO copied its branding, LED signage, and Facebook marketing strategies. This case prompts a discussion on ethical business practices and the potential motivations behind such actions.
Gangbang, a well-established Manila venue, invested significant time and resources in creating its unique brand identity. Its distinctive LED signage and social media presence helped it stand out in the competitive entertainment industry. The club was surprised to discover EXO closely mimicking its style, creating concerns over unfair competition and potential customer deception.
The Gangbang Club Manila team was unaware of EXO CLUB in Tagum, which closely resembled a branch. Bry Tuason showed us screenshots after discovering EXO. We found the imitation amusing but frustrating, down to the smallest detail, even copying emojis. It’s disheartening considering the effort our team dedicated to design, construction, sounds, and ideas for Gangbang Club Manila, only for it to be copied so readily.

Ethical Implications of Business Imitation
While drawing inspiration from competitors is common, outright duplication crosses ethical lines. EXO’s actions raise several key ethical concerns:
- Lack of Originality: Copying lacks originality and hinders healthy competition. EXO’s actions raise questions about their commitment to creative development.
- Unfair Advantage: EXO benefits from Gangbang’s investment without comparable effort. This undermines the fair competition principle.
- Deception: Customers might be misled into believing they are experiencing the same quality and service as Gangbang’s, leading to potential disappointment.
Possible Motivations for EXO’s Actions
The reasons behind EXO’s imitation remain unclear, but several possibilities exist:
- Inspiration: EXO may have been genuinely inspired by Gangbang’s success, seeking to emulate its appeal in their local market.
- Rapid Growth Strategy: Imitation can provide a quick route to establishing a presence. EXO might have aimed to attract customers without the time and investment needed for original brand building.
- Competitive Response: Intense competition in the entertainment industry might have pushed EXO to adopt imitation as a survival strategy.

Maintaining Integrity in the Business World
This case underscores the importance of originality, fair competition, and ethical conduct in business. Striking a balance between inspiration and originality is crucial for maintaining industry sustainability. While inspiration is valuable, outright imitation undermines the efforts of original creators and erodes trust with customers.
