The Filipino DJ community mourns the loss of DJ Joey Menia, a talented, kind, and humble individual. His legacy will continue to inspire. I, DJ Drey, had the honor of working with and remembering Joey.
Joey Menia: A Friend to All
Those who knew Joey remember him fondly. Chester Tan, co-owner of Fat Bar, describes him as “incredibly sincere and thoughtful.” Chester noted Joey’s ability to connect with diverse people, saying, “He was the kind of person who could get along with different types of people and be very genuine in doing so. All walks of life.”
Joey’s genuine nature resonated deeply. Chester adds, “He could really connect with different kinds of people. He was very down-to-earth and insightful. He wasn’t selfish, always giving advice and sharing stories of the DJs and artists he’d helped. It’s like he cared more about others than himself.”
A Masterful DJ
Joey’s skill as a DJ was undeniable. Chester states, “Yes, definitely, I’d even say underrated. If we talk about skills and knowledge, he was top of the line.” His talent was evident in his ability to read the crowd and play the perfect music at the right moment. Chester continues, “This person helped so many as a DJ, especially here in the north. He could really read the crowd, knows his music, when to play the right music. I’m not a DJ, but I’m confident to say that he’s one of the best.”
Humility and Dedication
Joey’s humility and dedication set him apart. He was a mentor and inspiration to aspiring DJs. Chester reflects, “Maybe the eagerness to learn more. Even though he had been in the industry for a long time, he never stopped practicing and preparing for his gigs/sets. Also, not to be selfish. He had countless students and DJs whom he taught. His work ethic was strong, always ready to work even at times of trials.”
A Lasting Impact
Joey’s influence extended beyond the DJ community. Bodega 22 club in Dagupan City recalls Joey’s support and generosity. They state, “Kuya Joey played for us for the first time on December 29, 2022. Before he played, he went to Bodega to support his fellow DJs. He approached us with a smile and introduced himself. He never boasted about being a veteran DJ…He was just really friendly. He wasn’t selfish with bar owners, sharing advice on how to strengthen operations. One thing that really stuck with me is when he voluntarily decided not to play when our bar was struggling due to an issue. He could have played that night, even if he left early, he’d still get paid the full amount. But he himself said, ‘Boss, I won’t play tonight. There aren’t enough people; it would be a waste of your payment.'”
DJ Teejay Subahri shared, “I didn’t know him for long—but the first time I went to Urdaneta, he took care of everything. He remembered me from Guilly’s, even though I didn’t know him then. I remember him giving me a thumbs-up with a smile and saying, ‘Your music’s good! Why are they bothering you?’ Hahaha. Even though we only spent a short time together, he didn’t forget me, and I can’t forget him. He even called me to check on me when I was about to sleep.”
Joey’s memory will serve as a reminder of music’s power to unite and the importance of kindness, humility, and passion. Rest in peace, DJ Joey Menia. Your music will continue to play in our hearts. – DJ Drey
