Alcohol, DJs, and the Lessons of Deadmau5 & ZHU at Coachella

DJs must maintain professionalism while performing, balancing alcohol consumption with their responsibilities to deliver quality shows. The Coachella incident with Deadmau5 illustrates the consequences of intoxication, emphasizing the importance of audience experience and personal limits.

It’s a common sight in nightlife: DJs often have drinks while they’re playing. The club environment naturally involves alcohol. However, beyond the vibe, DJs have important responsibilities to their audience and their work. They are putting on a show and need to maintain a level of professionalism.

The recent situation at Coachella, where Deadmau5’s (Testpilot) set with ZHU was cut short, highlights these responsibilities. While the specifics of that event are unique, it brings up the broader point: a DJ’s primary job is to deliver a good musical experience.

Having a drink or two might seem like part of the culture and can sometimes help a DJ connect with the atmosphere. But getting too intoxicated while performing can have negative effects. It can lead to mistakes in mixing, poor song choices, and unprofessional behavior on stage. This ultimately disappoints the audience and can harm the DJ’s reputation.

In the Coachella incident, Deadmau5 himself acknowledged his mistake and issued an apology for not being able to finish the set due to being overly intoxicated. This shows an understanding of the responsibility he had as a performer. His partner for the set, ZHU, was also affected by the situation but reportedly remained professional and understanding throughout the situation.

Like Deadmau5 and ZHU, I’m a DJ who also drinks. My intention isn’t to judge their Coachella experiences, but from my own perspective, maintaining professionalism and performing capably, even with a few drinks, is crucial.

Here are key responsibilities DJs should keep in mind regarding alcohol while working:

  • Prioritize the Performance: The main focus should always be on delivering a quality set for the audience. This is the core responsibility of a DJ.
  • Maintain Professionalism: Regardless of the setting, DJs should act professionally on stage and in their interactions with the audience, venue staff, and other artists.
  • Respect the Audience Experience: People come to see a DJ perform well. Intoxication that negatively impacts the music or the show disrespects the audience’s time and expectations.
  • Handle Equipment Responsibly: DJs are working with technical equipment that requires focus. Being under the influence can lead to errors or damage.
  • Be Mindful of Reputation: A DJ’s professional reputation is crucial for their career. Incidents related to intoxication can have lasting negative consequences.
  • Know Personal Limits: Understanding how alcohol affects one’s ability to DJ effectively is essential for responsible behavior.
  • Communicate Clearly (If Necessary): If a situation arises where alcohol consumption might affect performance, clear communication with venue management or fellow performers can help mitigate issues.

While the nightlife scene often involves alcohol, DJs have a responsibility to balance personal enjoyment with their professional obligations. Prioritizing the performance and maintaining a level of professionalism ensures a better experience for the audience and a more sustainable career for the DJ. The Coachella incident serves as a reminder of this important balance.
