When All “Pyesa” Start to Sound the Same: What’s Wrong with Playing it Safe?

When the airwaves are saturated with identical PYESA, there remains little breathing space for innovation or experimentation.

There is a growing concern that the “pyesa” (or selections) is starting to sound the same amongst Filipino DJ community. This is due in part to the popularity of certain style and sounds, such as TikTok music and Top 40s. As a result, many DJs are simply recycling the same old tracks and techniques, resulting in a stale and predictable sound.

There are a few reasons for this. First, playing it safe is a way to avoid taking risks. When you play a familiar mix you know that the crowd will react positively. You don’t have to worry about alienating anyone or getting booed off the stage.

Second, playing it safe is a way to fit in. In the Filipino DJ community, there is a lot of pressure to conform. If you’re not playing the same “pyesa” as everyone else, you’re seen as being weird or different.

Finally, playing it safe is a way to be successful. If you’re a DJ who is always playing the latest hits, you’re more likely to get booked for gigs and make money.

But there is a downside to playing it safe. First, it limits the creativity of DJs. When everyone is playing the same songs, there is no room for innovation or experimentation.

Second, it makes it difficult for new DJs to break into the scene. If everyone is sounding the same, it is hard to stand out from the crowd. Finally, it can be boring for the audience. If they hear the same songs over and over again, they will eventually lose interest.

So what can be done to address this issue? One solution is for DJs to be more selective about the tracks they play. Instead of just playing the most popular songs, they should focus on finding unique and interesting tracks that will set them apart from the rest. They should also be more willing to experiment with new genres and sounds.

Another solution is for DJs to focus more on their mixing skills. A well-mixed “pyesa” can make even the most generic tracks sound fresh and exciting. DJs should learn how to use different techniques, such as EQing, phrasing, and beatmatching, to create a seamless and dynamic mix.

Finally, DJs need to be more creative with their presentation. They can do this by incorporating different visuals, such as video or lighting, into their sets. They can also tell stories or engage with the audience to make their sets more engaging.

By taking these steps, Filipino DJs can help to ensure that the “pyesa” remains an exciting art form.

In addition to the above, here are some other things that Filipino DJs can do to avoid making their mixes sound the same:

  • Pay attention to the overall energy of the mix. Make sure that the tracks flow well together and that the overall mood is consistent, don’t redline also.
  • Be Creative. Use a variety of effects and techniques to add interest and variety to the mix.
  • Collaborate with other DJs. This is a great way to learn new things and get exposed to new music.
  • Attend workshops and seminars. This is a great way to improve skills and knowledge.
  • Experiment with different genres. This is a great way to find their own unique sound.
  • Don’t be afraid to take risks. This is the only way to grow as a DJ.

In addition, it is pretty common for Filipino DJs to share songs amongst fellow DJs or sell them. In fact, this can be a great way to support the music industry and help to promote new and upcoming artists. However, it is important to add your own twist to your performances, so that you are not simply copying what other DJs are doing. This means experimenting with different mixing techniques, using different effects, and incorporating your own unique style. By adding your own twist, you can create mixes that are truly original and exciting.

The most important thing is to have fun and be creative. If you’re enjoying yourself, it will show in your mix.
