Garry Cortez, a 3D Artist Expert, Discusses the Process Behind the Scenes

At one point, all of us had been charmed by animation. Over time, animation has become increasingly widespread and mainstream. Watching animated movies, even social media filters and latest games are much more interesting these days, thanks to the fast technological advancement of 3D rendering. Those visually compelling images are also frequently used as a shared visual communication resource. Animation is developing and diversifying in never-before-seen ways.
To this day, there is a continuing high demand for animated content. What is also apparent here is that the demand for animators are increasing. If you are interested in learning more about being an animator or you are simply curious about this fascinating vocation, you’ve come to the perfect spot.
We were able to get an insight into the world of animation through the eyes of Garry Cortez, an art director and 3D artist from Dubai for the past 7 years in the advertising and video production industry.
1. What methods do you use to keep up with the latest 3D animation trends?
Whenever I want to stay on top of the latest design and advertising trends, I visit Behance.net. If I’m looking for techniques in 3D animation, 3D modeling, or illustration, I go to Artstation.com.
2. Which animation techniques are you most familiar with? What are your favorite animation methods?
While keyframe animation is the most effective method, using motion capture will be extremely beneficial in projects with tight deadlines.
3. Describe a complex graphic you designed. How did you overcome any issues?
It is not a graphic design, but rather an animation that I created recently. It was a collaboration with another artist who lives and works in the city. My task was to composite a live-action model into a 3D environment using After Effects. Despite the fact that the footage provided to me was excellent, it lacked a proper chroma background and track marks. I have no choice but to rotoscope it frame by frame, which is what I’m doing. It’s a good thing the model didn’t move around too much because we were still able to get some decent results from it.
4. I’m curious about the most recent piece of creative hardware you’ve used. What impact did it have on your work?
My monitor is one of my favorites. I like how accurate the colors are, and how it doesn’t strain my eyes even when I’m working long hours. A wise investment, in my opinion.
5. Was there anything you’d do if you and a client were completely at odds over a creative concept?
A successful project outcome is usually the result of effective collaboration with the client. Give an explanation and defense of the concept you really want, and if that doesn’t work, try the happy medium approach.
6. When you’re working on animations, what is it that most inspires you?
Each project provides me with new opportunities to be inspired by the new things I learn. Sometimes you’ll learn a new piece of software, other times you’ll learn a new technique, and other times you’ll learn a valuable life lesson.
7. What, in your opinion, is the most important factor to consider when creating a realistic 3D environment?The use of appropriate texture, lighting, and scaling can make a significant difference.
8. Is your video with Manic Mundane’s Astral Bodies, which was named Video of the Day by Motion Design Awards, your most significant piece of work? Do you consider it to be your best work?
I can’t really quantify which of my works is my best because I have so many personal favorites, but my collaboration with Manic Mundane is unquestionably one of my highlights.
