The Tokyo Game Show’s organizers have released the schedule for this year’s event, which details what fans can expect from the four-day event. The schedule can be found here. As a surprise, there will also be a virtual reality version, which will be available on select virtual reality headsets.
The organizers of Tokyo Game Show VR 2021 have not yet provided specifics on how the show will provide a one-of-a-kind experience, but the show’s official website teases that VR users will be able to “visit booths as if you were wandering around inside the gaming world.” The VR version of the show, according to the event’s organizers, is a “grand experiment” in which they are “taking on the challenge of building the game show of the future.”
Tokyo Game Show VR 2021 will be available when the show opens on September 30 and will support the following VR headsets: Oculus Quest 1 & Quest 2, Oculus Rift, and the HTC Vive. The show will be held at the Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan. Owners of the Oculus Quest VR headset will be able to stream the VR version natively through their headset in addition to playing it on their computer.
The website also provides information on the system requirements for running the VR version of the showcase. Owners of Quest virtual reality headsets who have an internet connection of 20Mbps or higher are included in this requirement if you plan to run the show natively on those VR headsets. If you are using a different headset, the website also provides information on the computer requirements.
Tokyo Game Show, along with E3 and Gamescom, is one of the most important gaming events of the year – but it is the first to attempt to transfer its physical edition into a virtual reality environment to allow fans to experience the showcase. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo Game Show 2021, as well as E3 2021 and Gamescom 2021, will be held exclusively online. A virtual reality version of the event could provide gamers with an additional way to experience the event without having to watch live streams on their mobile device or computer.
However, the Tokyo Game Show 2021 will not be the only event this year where attendees can try out virtual reality. Virtual Market 6 held an online convention and marketplace in August, which was accessible via VR Chat.
