There are plans for the Amiga 500 to make a comeback as a mini-console, which will include a number of classic games such as Worms, Another World, The Chaos Engine, and others.
Retro Games has announced the development of the A500 Mini, a licensed reimagining of the 16-bit Amiga 500 home computer, in a press release. It was in 1987 that the first Commodore computer, which had a 16/32-bit CPU and 512kb RAM, was made available for purchase by consumers.
The A500 mini, which is scheduled to be released in early 2022, will emulate both the original A500 and the more advanced graphics architecture of the Amiga 1200, which will be released later that year. Players will be able to choose from a selection of 25 games that will be accessible through a virtual carousel that will be pre-loaded into the system.
Currently, Retro Games has announced 12 of the 25 games that will be released on the console next year, with the remainder of the lineup to be announced at a later date. The titles include:
- Breed 3D
- Another World
- ATR: All Terrain Racing
- Battle Chess
- Kick Off 2
- Pinball Dreams
- Simon The Sorcerer
- Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe
- The Chaos Engine
- Worms: The Director’s Cut
- Zool: Ninja Of The ”Nth” Dimension.
In a statement, Retro Games stated that the console will include USB functionality, allowing fans to load additional games onto it. In addition, players will have access to a variety of other features, such as the ability to choose between 50Hz and 60Hz screen refresh rates, a CRT filter, and a variety of scaling options.
Paul Andrews, managing director of Retro Games, spoke about his expectations for the A500 Mini in this interview. “With this initial mini version of the A500, we have created something we believe gaming fans will enjoy and will recognize as the next step in the evolution of mini games consoles,” he said.
The A500 Mini is equipped with a two-button mouse in the authentic style, as well as an eight-button gamepad for those who wish to use the device with a controller. Additionally, the retro console will ship with additional ports that will allow fans to connect a separate external standard PC keyboard for additional functionality. It will also include in-game save and pause features to assist players in completing each of the console’s classic titles.
The A500 mini will be the latest in a long line of retro consoles that have been released in recent years, including the A500 and A500 mini. Already available on the market are modern, miniature versions of the SNES Classic, PlayStation Classic, C64 Mini, and Sega Genesis Mini, which allow you to relive the nostalgia of days gone by while playing a modern version of the game. Each one pays homage to a particular era in the history of retro gaming and features designs that pay homage to hardware from previous generations. Last year, IGN published a list of the best retro gaming consoles available today, which you can read about here. However, only time will tell how well the A500 Mini performs in the face of such fierce competition.
