BEST CO-OP GAMES TO PLAY | AUGUST 2021

These are the best co-op games to play with your favorite digital explorer, whether you’re playing online or from the comfort of your own home.

The best co-op games ensure that spending time with your friends is the most enjoyable experience you’ve ever had. Okay, so it wasn’t the most fun you’ve ever had, but it was the kind of experience that you’ll be talking and laughing about for a long time to come. Plenty of games these days offer cooperative experiences, although the emphasis is generally on playing online rather than locally on the couch. However, it can be difficult to determine which games are worthwhile investing your time in. That’s where we come in to lend a hand.

After countless hours of co-operative gaming, we’ve come to understand what makes a game truly enjoyable and what makes a game truly enjoyable only because you’re laughing with your friends. We’ve concentrated on games that are available for a variety of platforms, so no matter what console (or PC) you own, there’s something here that’s worth playing with a friend. Although you can play most of these games with a stranger, that isn’t the point of them. No matter how cringeworthy that phrase may be to you, you are creating memories here, and we are confident that you will recall some of the most important ones.

We’ll get right to it: these are the best co-op games to play with your friends, whether they’re online or on the couch.

MONSTER HUNTER RISE

Platforms(s): Nintendo Switch, PC

Do you want to team up with your bestie to take on ridiculously massive monsters? That is the premise of Monster Hunter: Rise. It won’t be easy because the monsters are colossal in size. It is necessary to master complex weapon types, tools, and environmental challenges along the way, but the sweet sense of accomplishment that follows is immeasurable once completed.

It is necessary to have strong teamwork skills in this situation because of the challenge, especially if you choose to work in groups of up to four hunters at a time. Although it is considered to be one of the best co-op games available, it also works well as a single-player experience if you are up to the challenge.

DIABLO III

Platforms(s): PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Diablo III is a classic hack-and-slash game that is almost completely mindless fun. Choosing classes carefully and delving into complex statistical analysis are all options, but most of the time it’s just a lot of fun to team up with a friend and take down a demon. Gear is dropped liberally, so you always have the sense of accomplishment that comes from knowing you’re making progress, and it’s simple to accomplish a great deal in a short period of time.

Hardcore mode is available if you want to take on the challenge of not being able to raise yourself from the dead, but you and your partner must both be extremely confident in your abilities before taking on this mode of play. Diablo III is a satisfying amount of loot-based entertainment in any case.

STREETS OF RAGE 4

Platforms(s): Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5

If you grew up with a Sega Mega Drive, the Streets of Rage series may have been your first introduction to co-operative video game play. Streets of Rage 4 is a fantastic game that allows you to relive that sensation. Seriously, it’s a dream come true to be able to play it. Similarly to previous games, the combat is simple to learn but difficult to master as you learn the rhythm that works best for each individual character. Combo attacks are essential for accumulating a substantial high score, as well as for experiencing a tremendous sense of accomplishment when you and your teammates defeat a boss without taking a hit.

In addition to the main story mode, there is an Arcade mode that requires you to complete the game on a single credit, and a series of difficulty levels that allow you to increase the difficulty to a frightening level if you so desire. Just be careful not to accidentally punch your friend in the face. It has the potential to devolve into a scuffle, which is not what you want from one of the best co-op games…

IT TAKES TWO

Platforms(s): PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

It Takes Two has you taking on the role of a married couple on the verge of divorcing. However, things change quickly, with different levels presenting a variety of challenges to contend with. For example, one character has the ability to rewind time during one segment, while the other has the ability to duplicate themselves.

In order to advance the story and work on re-establishing the relationship between the two main characters, you and your friend must use these abilities to solve puzzles. Couples may find it to be a welcome change of pace from so many other cooperative experiences, and it may even help to strengthen their relationship.

A WAY OUT

Platforms(s): PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

A Way Out, in contrast to most games, can only be played with a group of people, indicating that it is well-suited for the purpose. Players take control of Leo and Vincent, two convicted felons who must break out of prison and remain on the run until they are apprehended. Working as a team is essential to success in this game, as evidenced by scenarios in which one player must create a distraction while another works on their escape, necessitating careful coordination between players.

There’s also a storyline to follow, as well as a series of minigames to participate in throughout the game. The important thing to remember about A Way Out is that it truly feels like an experience that you won’t be able to get anywhere else, and the person you choose to team up with will make a significant difference in how much you enjoy it. Choose a good and trustworthy friend, and you will be able to take pleasure in the bizarre twists and turns of this story.

AMONG US

Platforms(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

No one can you put your trust in? You’ll enjoy Among Us. There’s a reason why it’s regarded as one of the best co-op games released in recent years. Up to 15 players can take part in the game, with up to three of them being chosen at random to be impersonators. It’s up to you and the others to figure out who’s the imposter and who isn’t before it’s too late. There are tasks to complete in the form of minigames, with imposters attempting to blend in by following a fictitious list of instructions.

All of this amounts to a sociological experiment in terms of trying to figure things out, and you may be surprised to discover that your friends are much better at lying and concealing information than you had previously assumed. Discussions about who might be the imposter can become animated, and this is where the most fun can be had. It’s a fun way to approach things in a slightly different way.

HALO: THE MASTER CHIEF COLLECTION

Platforms(s): Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Halo: The Master Chief Collection includes every single game in the main Halo franchise, which includes Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4.  A lot of cooperative Halo action, and the games really come to life when you play them with others, making this one of the best co-op games available right now. These games are not only excellent first-person shooters in their own right, but they have also defined much of the genre in recent years and provide a lot of nostalgia for players.

If you’re playing with friends, increase the difficulty setting, and you’ll really appreciate the adrenaline rush you get from finishing the frantic end of Halo 3 or taking on a fearsome boss in Halo 4’s multiplayer mode. These are the kinds of experiences that will remain etched in your memory for a long time to come, and you are unlikely to run out of options anytime soon.

SEA OF THIEVES

Platforms(s): PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

If you and your friends have ever fantasized about becoming pirates, we won’t hold it against you. As an alternative, we’ll direct you to Sea of Thieves, where you can do exactly that. In an open-world environment, it is possible for groups of players to come into contact with one another, so it is critical that you work well together to avoid being plundered. This place offers plenty of freedom, including the ability to be as nefarious as you want while also simply exploring the high seas.

There’s a lot of freedom in this game, with the ability to track down treasure, form alliances, complete quests, or simply attack everyone who comes your way. Sea of Thieves isn’t quite a solo experience, but it can be strangely liberating when played with a group of friends.

OVERCOOKED 2

Platforms(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC

Interested in irreparably damaging a long-standing friendship in the most bizarre way possible? Cooking with them is a great experience. While it is possible to cook with them in person, Overcooked 2 is far more bizarre than simply preparing a regular dinner. In this cooking simulator, teams of up to four players must prepare and cook orders in strange restaurants in order to advance to the next level. Gathering, chopping, and cooking ingredients before putting them together on a plate is standard procedure; however, the restaurants themselves present some difficulties.

Moveable walkways, portals, and even impassable fires are examples of such dangers, and it is critical that you and your fellow travelers carefully plan for how to avoid them. And, of course, everything is timed, and if you make a mistake or take too long, your customers will be unhappy. It’s frantic, but it’s also a lot of fun. Because teamwork is essential, don’t be surprised if you and your colleagues have a brief falling out from time to time. Still, you’ll find yourself laughing hysterically – and that’s exactly what the best co-op games should force you to do.
