In the case of Ghostlore, a new game being developed by Singaporean solo developer Andrew Teo, this is exactly what has happened. The game, which Teo described as a ‘on and off project’, was first announced on Reddit last year, and the developer has finally had the opportunity to work on it during the current lockdown.
Ghostlore is an isometric action-RPG that draws heavily on the likes of Diablo 2 and Oblivion for inspiration. Except that, instead of being based on the myths and legends of the Western world, Ghostlore pays homage to the indigenous folklore of Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
A good example of this is the plethora of monsters that exist in the world of Ghostlore, including the vampires Pontianak and Penaggal, demons such as the Hantu Raya and Hantu Tinggi, and even more impish creatures like the Orang Minyak.
The gameplay of Ghostlore is demonstrated in a new progress video posted on YouTube, which highlights the combat system, an inventory system, progression systems, and a couple of story elements. There’s even a durian that can be consumed by the player in order to repel enemies.
The island of Seaport serves as the setting for the story of Ghostlore, and it is here that the Master Ghosthunter keeps ghosts and ghouls at bay. When the master goes missing, it is up to the player, acting as his apprentice, to track him down and destroy the Mogui that stands in his way of success.
This 25-minute gameplay video showcases a significant portion of what players can expect from Ghostlore, including multiple battle encounters and interactions with non-player characters (NPCs). Also shown is an image of the in-game bestiary, which contains all of the Mogui that are based on Southeast Asian folk monsters.
If this game sounds like it would be a good time for you, you can check out a browser-based demo on itch.io. On Facebook and Twitter, you can keep up with Ghostlore’s latest news, and you can also donate to Ghostlore’s Patreon campaign.
