While some of us prefer to play video games on our computers or consoles, an increasing number of people are turning to their smartphones for entertainment. With so many free-to-play games to choose from, there’s little chance of getting bored while on the go.

The mobile market continues to dominate the gaming industry, with people around the world spending a record 3.8 trillion hours playing games on their phones in 2021. APP Annie, a leading mobile data and analytics company, published an analysis of these figures each year, and this information was made public by the company.

Consumers have continued to embrace a mobile lifestyle, according to App Annie’s State of Mobile 2022 report, which stated that 2021 had been a record-breaking year.

Individuals in the world’s most developed mobile markets spent an astounding 4.8 hours per day on their mobile devices, with countries such as Indonesia and Singapore ranking among the top 10.

Consumers will spend US$170 billion on apps in 2021, representing a 19% increase over the previous year. Downloads have continued to grow at a five percent rate year over year, reaching a total of 230 billion apps downloaded.

Publishers aren’t slowing down either, as two million new apps and games were released last year, bringing the total number of new apps and games released to 21 million since the beginning of 2011. Mobile gaming grew to US$116 billion in 2017, representing a 15% increase over the previous year, thanks to the popularity of hyper casual games such as Bridge Race and Stumble Guys.

Genshin Impact, an open-world action-RPG developed by MiHoYo, was the biggest winner in mobile gaming last year, with the game topping sales charts in Southeast Asia and other regions.

Within the borders of Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, Genshin Impact continues to be the most popular video game in which gamers invest their time and money. In both Indonesia and Vietnam, the game came in second place.

The massive popularity of Genshin Impact is expected to grow even more this year, with events ranging from physical competitions to wedding proposals.

Genshin Impact is the second most popular game in the world in terms of consumer spending, trailing only Roblox and the Japanese game Uma Musume Pretty Derby in terms of spending.

A staggering number of hyper casual experiences are gaining in popularity, with more than a handful of them being exact replicas of one another, according to this year’s State of Mobile report, which was released on Tuesday.
