In addition to being a haven for children, the game platform aspires to become the metaverse, a virtual universe of interconnected virtual worlds, like in novels such as Snow Crash and Ready Player One. As a result, it is introducing non-gaming entertainment as a means of broadening its appeal and retaining players on the Roblox platform for a longer period of time. Speaking of the metaverse, Roblox announced last week Vans World, a collaboration with the shoe brand to create a metaverse experience within the Roblox gaming environment.
At 4 p.m. Pacific on September 17, a virtual reality performance inside Roblox will be broadcasted live on the platform. GamesBeat’s Mike Minotti is joined by Columbus, Ohio artists Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. They will perform songs from their latest full-length album, Scaled And Icy. This is the biggest opening week for a rock album in 2021, with the album debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top “Rock Albums” and “Alternative Albums” charts, and landing at No. 3 on the “Billboard 200.” They’ve also been nominated for a Grammy.
A dynamic setlist dictated by fans in real time will be included in the high-fidelity experience, making it the first of its kind. It will also feature “metaverse-spanning” pre-concert quests that will take users through some of Roblox’s most popular experiences, as well as custom portals that will transport them into the pre-concert venue.
The Roblox event, which was created in close collaboration with the band and creative director Mark Eshleman, aligns with Twenty One Pilots’ fan-first philosophy by bringing this experience to fans all over the world. In addition to hit songs, the five-song set will include new material from their upcoming album, Scaled and Icy, which will be released in 2021.
Roblox’s concert experience will feature a dynamic setlist, which will allow users to direct the order of songs performed in each concert through instantaneous voting, which will take place once the concert has begun. Each song will have its own custom-designed set with a high level of fidelity and realism, which will be powered by the most up-to-date Roblox lighting, physically based rendering, and motion capture technologies, among other things.
Aside from these features, Roblox has also developed emotes, interactive features, and bespoke virtual merchandise (also known as “verch”), which includes more than 30 exclusive custom-designed pieces that can be purchased.
There will be three top Roblox experiences — Ultimate Driving: Westover Islands, Creatures of Sonaria, and World / Zero — that will be integrated into the pre-concert quests. These three top Roblox experiences have a combined total of over 400 million visits. Users will be able to earn Twenty One Pilots prizes through these quests, which will also include portals that will allow users to be transported into the Twenty One Pilots pre-concert venue from anywhere on the Roblox platform in the days leading up to the performance.
Fans can watch performances at the top of each hour until Sunday, September 19 at 11 p.m. Pacific time. You can also listen to Twenty One Pilot’s latest album, Scaled and Icy below.
