As is the case with Indonesian developer Dragon Emperors, who should be commended for their tenacity and dedication to a cause in which they sincerely believed they were right. Originally conceived as a math-based puzzle game called “Cengkeh Batu,” the concept has since been given a supernatural twist by the game’s creators.
This then evolved into LastOne: Behind the Choice, which was released on Newgrounds and maintained the core gameplay of having the player face off against the personification of death while taking turns picking up stones from three jars.
The winning team is the one that leaves the other team with no stones to pick up. Dragon Emperors is bringing back their puzzle game, renamed Lastone: Behind the Choice, which now includes a visual novel element. Lastone: Behind the Choice is available on Steam now.
Lastone: Behind the Choice has evolved significantly from its original concept to become a point-and-click visual novel puzzle game in which players must battle against a large number of different characters. Lucifer, the devil himself, continues to serve as the primary antagonist.
Lucifer has lured a group of people into an alternate dimension, where he has forced them to participate in his game if they want to survive the experience. Players will be able to form bonds with their fellow captives and learn more about their backgrounds as a result of their interactions.
Taking inspiration from films such as the Saw series and visual novel games such as Danganronpa, players will discover and progress through the stories of three playable characters from diverse backgrounds, ultimately deciding their ultimate fate at the conclusion of their journey.
During the past nine years, Dragon Emperor has been refining this concept through their Tumblr page, which chronicles their progress. Between then and now, the developers have released two role-playing games on Steam: Cursed Mansion and Oracle of Forgotten Testament.
With this new Steam release, Lastone: Behind the Choice has been enhanced, and the developer has promised that more content will be added to the game in the future. There is also a Deluxe Edition of the game, which includes a digital concept art book and wallpapers in addition to the game itself.
