MIDNIGHTREBELS-GTA5

INCREDIBLY, GTA 5 CAN WORK ON THE ORIGINAL GAME BOY

In case you’ve ever wondered what one of today’s most popular games would look like on a console that’s more than 30 years old, you’re in luck. A modder has demonstrated how he was able to get Grand Theft Auto 5 to run on the original Nintendo Game Boy console in this video.

Sebastian Staacks, a coder who maintains a blog detailing all of his creations, is responsible for this gaming achievement. A descriptive and somewhat technical breakdown of how each creation came to be, as well as how they function, is provided in each blog post. In addition, he provides a video explanation that is marginally easier to follow.

Before attempting to run a game like Grand Theft Auto 5 on such an old console, Staacks created a WiFi Game Boy cartridge. The cartridge is inserted into the console in the same way that other Game Boy games are, and it then allows the console to receive a wireless network signal. Despite the fact that Staacks describes it as “one of the most useless things I’ve ever created,” it is actually quite impressive. Detailed instructions on how the device was created can be found here, with a more straightforward There is a more in-depth write-up on the device’s development here, as well as a more straightforward video walkthrough below.

Staacks went one step further and used the WiFi cartridge to stream high-definition video and play games on the console just a few weeks after developing it. In particular, the video that accompanies his post shows him enjoying a game of Grand Theft Auto V on an unmodified Game Boy.

In order to avoid any misunderstandings, while Staacks is playing Grand Theft Auto 5 on the system, the game itself is not running on the Game Boy itself. In its place, the game is rendered on his PlayStation and streamed over WiFi, though pressing buttons on the Game Boy does send the input back to the PlayStation, allowing him to control the game’s progress. An in-depth technical explanation of what is taking place is available on Staacks’ blog.

Other people can make their own Game Boy WiFi cartridges, which will allow them to stream content to their own devices, as demonstrated by Staacks. It is amazing to see what technology has made possible, even if the original Game Boy isn’t everyone’s first choice when it comes to playing a contemporary video game.
