Presented annually since1953, the Hugo Awards recognize the best works of science fiction and fantasy literature. It was not planned to take into consideration video games and their stories until 2021, but that is now being reconsidered.
While this is exciting, it’s important to remember that the “Best Video Game” category was a one-time addition for the year 2021 and will not be repeated. However, the committee for the WSFS Business Meeting has “been studying the possibility of adding such a category for several years now,” according to the committee’s website. Despite the fact that it is a special category, Hades’ victory is treated the same as that of those who win in permanent categories.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Spiritfarer, Final Fantasy VII Remake, The Last of Us: Part II, and Blaseball were among the games that Hades had to beat in order to win the prestigious award.
Greg Kasavin, writer and creative director of Supergiant Games, took to Twitter to express his gratitude on behalf of the entire team, stating that it is an honor to receive the first Hugo Award in the video game industry.
Another trophy for Hades to add to his collection, which already includes IGN’s Game of the Year 2020, nine awards at the inaugural Global Game Industry Awards, and best game at the GDC Choice Awards 2021, BAFTA Games Awards 2020, SXSW Gaming Awards 2021, Gayming Awards 2020, D.I.C.E. Awards 2020, and other prestigious competitions, among others.
