HACK YOUR WAY THROUGH PUZZLES AND BATTLES IN MALAYSIAN RPG ‘EXIST.EXE’

Exist.EXE is clearly inspired by classic SNES JRPGs, and it incorporates a story about creation and existentialism.

In light of the success of films such as Tron and .hack, which captivated us with tales of digital worlds that were within our grasp, it is only fitting that game developers from this generation create games that take place in cyberspace.

Malaysian role-playing games Exist.EXE  is one such game, drawing obvious inspiration from classic SNES JRPGs while incorporating a story about creation and existentialism into its gameplay.

The story revolves around a game developer named Marcus, who finds himself trapped within a game he created, which appears to be distorted and not at all like the creation he intended to create. Marcus is on a journey of self-discovery, and he must uncover the secrets of the game along the way.

Exist.EXE includes puzzle elements that challenge players to think outside of the box when solving puzzles. Specifically, this applies to the game’s environmental puzzles, which allow players to resize the objects around them in order to create a path, or even create teleportation nodes in order to cross chasms, among other things.

Battles will take place in turn-based fashion, in the style of classic JRPGs, with four party members on each side of the conflict engaging in battle against one another.

Players can hack the combat system in the same way they can hack the overworld by tweaking the skills of their party members, affecting the effect values of attacks, redirecting damage to different targets, and a variety of other things.

In the game, which is being developed by the Malaysian studio Skyfeather Games, the 16-bit pixel art style is used to create a bright and vibrant environment.

Take a look at the Exist.EXE demo on its official itch.io page.
