MIDNIGHT REBELS / Glossary

Four-on-the-Floor

Definition

A steady kick drum on every beat — one, two, three, four, no gaps — the rhythmic backbone underneath house, techno, and most four-to-the-floor-descended genres. Traces back to disco in the ’70s, when producers wanted a pulse a dancer’s body could lock onto without thinking about it. Simple on paper; the whole art of a track is what a producer builds on top of that unbroken pulse.
