FIVE GAMES RECENTLY RELEASED ON STEAM THAT YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT

We’re going through each and every new release on Steam to save you the time and effort.

On Steam, approximately a dozen new games are released every day on average. While we believe this is a positive development, we recognize that it can be difficult to keep up with. You will almost certainly miss out on potentially exciting gems in the deluge of new things to play unless you go through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve tried to accomplish. If nothing else piques your interest this week, we’ve compiled a list of the best PC games available right now, as well as a running list of the 2021 games that will be released this year.

BRIGHT LIGHTS OF SVETLOV

Release:‌ ‌September 15
Developer:‌ Vladimir Cholokyan
Launch price:‌ ‌$5 |‌ ‌£4 |‌ ‌AU$7.50
Download it HERE

Bright Lights of Svetlov is a first-person narrative and exploration game set in a Soviet town in the 1980s.  A family’s “gradual descent under harsh trials” is revealed to the player as the protagonist goes about his or her daily domestic business in this town, which has a “carefully depicted atmosphere of [the] USSR.” Given that it’s a short film (developer Vladimir Cholokyan estimates a 1.5-hour runtime), think of it as an enveloping, filmic mood piece.

THE AMAZING AMERICAN CIRCUS

Release:‌ September 16
Developer:‌ Klabater
Launch price:‌ $18 ‌|‌ ‌£13.94 |‌ ‌‌AU$26.05
Download it HERE

Rather than using cards to smite slime or goblins and monsters, you’ll be putting on a circus in this deckbuilding roleplaying game. A roaming circus in late nineteenth-century America, which, according to the Steam description, is “full of bizarre folklore, brutal crime, and social inequality,” is the setting for the game. In addition to engaging in card duels against 32 different types of audience members (using the power of entertainment), you’ll be responsible for managing your circus camp and developing your talent from among the 15 available performers. This appears to be a truly innovative take on the deck builder, which is particularly appealing if you’re tired of the same old fantasy tropes.

MANDINGA – A TALE OF BANZO

Release:‌ September 17
Developer:‌ Uruca Game Studio
Launch price:‌ ‌$8 |‌ ‌£5.79|‌ ‌AU$11.50
Download it HERE

The game Mandinga is ostensibly a JRPG, but it is set in the 1820s in Brazil and is being developed by a Brazilian company. It follows the exploits of two heroes, Akil (“a Muslim with a wide range of knowledge”) and Obadelê (“a strong capoeirista warrior”). While the Steam page provides no explanation for why these heroes have banded together or what their common goal is, Mandinga clearly looks and plays like an old-school JRPG: there’s dice-based turn-based combat and a gorgeous pixel art world to explore.

SEVERED STEEL

Release:‌ ‌September 18
Developer:‌ Greylock Studio
Launch price:‌ ‌$22.49 ‌|‌ ‌£17.54 ‌|‌ ‌AU$32.35
Download it HERE

An extremely rare creature has emerged: a new single player first-person shooter that does not appear to have been created in the 1990s. In terms of visuals, Severed Steel has an elegant style reminiscent of Superhot or the Syndicate FPS, and the game is all about movement and destruction. It has a high degree of destructibility in its voxel environments, as well as bullet time and a stunt system. The AI is “dynamic” and “unscripted,” according to the developers. It’s getting a lot of really positive feedback on Steam, and if the included level editor becomes popular, there’ll be a lot to get your teeth into in the coming months.

TOEM

Release:‌ September 17
Developer:‌ Something We Made
Launch price:‌ ‌$18 |‌ ‌£13.94 ‌|‌ ‌AU$26.05
Download it HERE

When you play Toem, you take on the role of a cute little bug (or mouse? it’s hard to tell) with photographic eyes. That gives you the ability to solve problems and unravel mysteries, which is exactly what you’ll be doing for the majority of your time here. Toem is essentially a free-roaming adventure game about taking beautiful photos for people in a serene monochrome town. There even appears to be a “honk” button, which more games should include, to be honest. If you’re looking for a zen experience, this is definitely one to add to your list of options.
