So far, here’s what we know. Apple’s patents, which date back a decade, cover technologies related to folding phones. Apple has even been patenting hinge features and flexible glass technology, and sources close to the situation claim that Apple has constructed functional prototypes that have been tested by Foxconn to fold and unfold 100,000 times… but there’s no certainty that these prototypes will become mass-produced ‘folding iPhones.’ We can only imagine what a folding iPhone might look like until they do (if they do), and it appears like designer and YouTuber Technizo Concept has one in mind.
The iPhone Flip (designed by Technizo Concept in partnership with LetsGoDigital) has the same name and folding structure as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, with a few notable exceptions. The smartphone is roughly the same size as your current iPhone 12 Pro Max, but it has a folding line across its ‘waist,’ allowing it to split in half like a 1990s clamshell phone. This folding construction makes the iPhone more compact and easy to carry (albeit the folded version is twice the thickness of the phone), as well as allowing you to use it as a little laptop by folding it halfway in a ‘L’ shape.
The inclusion of a secondary screen next to the camera bump is, however, the most notable feature of the iPhone Flip. This secondary screen, which is designed to fit the camera bump’s form exactly, is ideal for viewing alerts on the go or even utilizing as a preview window when taking selfies with the main camera module. You could even close the iPhone Flip halfway and place it against a surface to take faraway selfies without using a tripod.
Even if Apple does introduce a folding iPhone, it won’t be until 2023, according to well-known leaker Jon Prosser. Prosser even went on to claim that the iPhone would prefer an inward-folding screen over an outward-folding one, and that a smaller, clamshell-style iPhone would be more likely than a bigger, Galaxy Fold-inspired iPhone. I’m simply here to tell you if you want to buy a folding iPhone when it comes out, you should start saving now… because it won’t be cheap!
